Due to a dispute, mainly about finances and the size of the event, the organizing committee of Montreal - preparing for the Gay Games - broke off from the FGG and decided to organize their own event, and named it World Outgames. The Gay Games were then organized in Chicago, ending just a week before the Outgames in Montreal. This led to problems for many participants, most of whom had to choose between the two.

Host Cities Cleveland + Akron Ready for Gay Games | Sports Destination Management
The weeklong festival of sports and culture is expected to draw more than 10, participants from around the world, along with an estimated 20, additional visitors, performers, spectators and volunteers. In addition, this event presents an opportunity to showcase Cleveland and Akron as world-class destinations, welcoming all visitors. To date, hundreds of people from all over the world have already expressed their interest in participating, volunteering or otherwise supporting the Gay Games in Currently, Gay Games 9 has more than volunteer professionals from across the LGBT and allied communities who are currently serving on nine committees. Gay Games 9 also is forging strategic partnerships throughout Northeast Ohio. Approximately 35 sports and culture events are expected to be a part of Gay Games 9.

The Gay Games is an international sporting and cultural event held every four years since This year the games presented by the Cleveland Foundation will take place August , , in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. As many as10, people from more than 60 countries are expected in participate in 35 sporting events. The games offer a sense of inclusiveness as they are open to anyone 18 years or older.
