Volunteers looking to help with the program are lining up to serve and get a first-hand look at the justice system. Patti Hinrikus, program director for Adams County Teen Court and Diversion Services that runs the program, said minor modifications have been made through the year, but the focus remains on providing restorative justice for youth. Through the teen court, a youth will admit to wrong-doing and face a jury of his or her peers to decide the punishment. Since the program was started in November , 56 youth have been referred to the teen court. Of those who have been sanctioned, 26 youth have completed the program and 15 cases are still open, meaning some portion of the sanctions have not been finished.

What is Teen Court? The courtroom is run by teens that sentence their peers with the intent of repairing the harm caused by the offender, and providing education to make better decisions for their future. Teen Court also offers an educational opportunity for teens who may be interested in the Criminal Justice field to earn community service and experience by becoming active members of the courtroom.
